La Agenda Social y las Relaciones Exteriores de México

The Social Agenda and Foreign Relations of Mexico

In the globalized world of the 21st century, the main social problems in Mexico have acquired an unprecedented international and transnational dimension. On the one hand, the management of political issues such as poverty and inequality, threats to public health, drugs, migration, human rights and gender issue are closely linked to the interaction of Mexico and its society with the rest of the world. On the other hand, many international, governmental and non-governmental actors seek to play an active role in the definition of agendas and in the design of public policies.

This international dimension has been explicitly recognized by the establishment of international affairs offices in all government agencies responsible for addressing the social issue. However, there seems to be no systematic effort to analyze and reflect the problems, modalities and levels of coordination between the national and international level in this field.

With this concern, the themes are brought together in a plural group of academics, public officials, social experts and multilateral representatives, the themes of the national social agenda which, due to their transnational and global character, public policies with adequate schemes of international cooperation and management: poverty and inequality; Public health; Drugs, violence, and youth; Migration; Human rights and gender equality.

The purpose of the project is to open a necessary dialogue between social policies and international relations in Mexico, the disciplinary fields that frequently operate in our country in a segmented and disjointed manner. The central objective is to help connect national social policies with international policies in this field and bidding between the various analytical perspectives, professional, academic and epistemic networks. With this we hope to identify also the consequences of the international insertion of Mexico for the social agenda of the country and what role can foreign policy play.
