Santiago Gutiérrez was awarded the Woodrow Wilson Center - Fundacón Vidanta Scholarship to begin his six-month research project focusing on innovation and productivity in the region, with a particular emphasis on the role of multilatinas. “The phenomenon of low productivity has been around for decades and no country, not even Chile, has been able to solve it in a definitive manner […] The problem has been that we Latin Americans have not yet learned to combine resources efficiently. Today we have more physical assets, but still require five people—now better educated—to change a light bulb,” Gutiérrez said.

Santiago Gutiérrez has been executive editor at the Wilson Center since 2012. Previously, he was a journalist for the Andean Region for Debtwire, an affiliate of the Financial Times Group, and director of Dinero.com. He has received several prestigious awards such as the Simón Bolívar National Award for Journalism, the Anif Economic Journalism Award, and the Citigroup Journalistic Excellence Award. In addition to his work in journalism, Gutiérrez has served on the boards of several private sector firms in Colombia. He holds a Ph.D. in Economics from the University of Minnesota.
