The Vidanta-Wilson 2018 Fellowship was directed to researchers, professionals, journalists and intellectuals with the aim of conducting research and proposing solutions to "Promote the development of sustainable tourism in Latin America and the Caribbean".
The questions that guided the selection of applications were the following: How can sustainability objectives -in topics such as land use, impact on watersheds and native flora and fauna, pollution and waste disposal- be part of a strategy that integrates tourism development goals with the protection of vulnerable ecosystems and local communities? Will the landscapes, climate, biodiversity and historical and cultural heritage of Latin America and the Caribbean continue to attract visitors from the region and around the world? As these flows expand, the need to adopt sustainability criteria in a set of areas becomes increasingly crucial.
Hernan Mladinic was selected as the second fellow of the Vidanta-Wilson Fellowship to carry out his six-month research project on sustainable tourism in Latin America and the Caribbean.
Hernan Mladinic is a sociologist graduated from the University of Chile with maximum distinction and Master of Arts in Environmental Studies from the University of Toronto. Between 1989 and 1994 he coordinated the Antarctic and Environment program of the Foundation for the Development of Magellan (FIDE XII), organizing campaigns and international dissemination meetings around southern and Antarctic environmental problems.
