Rebeca Grynspan and Nora Lustig have joined the Panel of Judges for the Vidanta Foundation Award. Rebeca Grynspan is Under-Secretary-General of the United Nations and Associate Administrator of the UNDP. She was the Vice President of Costa Rica (1994-1998), Vice Minister of Treasury (1986-1988), Minister of Housing and Human Settlements (1996-1998), Coordinating Minister of the Economic Sector (1995-1996), and Coordinating Minister of the Social Sector of the Government (1994-1998). Nora Lustig is Samuel Z. Stone Professor of Latin American Economics in the Department of Economics of Tulane University and non-resident fellow at the Center For Global Development and the Inter-American Dialogue. Julio Maria Sanguinetti, Carmelo Angulo, Jose Luis Machinea and Luis Maira will also form part of the Panel of Judges. The Panel of Judges will meet on September 6 in Riviera Maya, Mexico.

ASIA-LATIN AMERICA FORUM
Within the framework of the project “Asia and Latin America in the New Century,” the Woodrow Wilson Center, with the support of the Vidanta Foundation, will hold a conference about the current state, and future direction of, relations between Latin America and Asia. NEW PROJECT: ASIA AND LATIN AMERICA IN THE NEW CENTURY
The Vidanta Foundation and the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars signed an agreement of cooperation to jointly carry out the project “Asia and Latin America in the New Century.” The project will be sponsored by the Vidanta Foundation and will be developed in two phases: visions from Latin America about relations with Asia, and visions from Latin America, Asia and North America about the Trans-Pacific Strategic Economic Partnership (TPSEP)/Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP). The work on the first phase of the project will be presented in a seminar that will take place in the city of Washington on June 20. It will involve six case studies about the implications of the links with Asia on the development and foreign relations of Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, Chile, Mexico and Peru.

SECOND MEETING OF THE ADVISORY COUNCIL OF THE CITIZEN SECURITY PROJECT OF THE UNDP
The Advisory Council of the “Citizen Security in Latin America” project of the United Nations Development Programme met in Viña del Mar, Chile, on January 11 and 12. The Council discussed the work that was presented by the team of researchers that leads this project. Daniel Chavez Moran, President of Vidanta Group, joined the group of advisors that participated in the meeting. Dr. Roberto Russell, President of the Vidanta Foundation, attended the meeting as a special guest.

OFFICIAL FORMATION OF THE LATIN AMERICAN COUNCIL FOR INTERNATIONAL RELATIONS (RIAL COUNCIL)
The Latin American Council for International Relations has officially been formed. Presided over by the former president of Chile, Ricardo Lagos, it is comprised of the former president of Mexico, Ernesto Zedillo, the former president of the Dominican Republic, Leonel Fernández, the former ministry of foreign relations and education of Colombia and secretary general of (UNASUR), María Emma Mejía, and the external affairs advisor to the president of Brazil, Marco Aurelio García. They are joined by Alicia Bárcena, Executive Secretary of ECLAC, José Miguel Insulza, Secretary General of the OAS, Enrique García, President of CAF (the Latin American Development Bank), Heraldo Muñoz, Assistant Secretary General of the UN and Regional Director of the UNDP, and Luis Alberto Moreno, President of the Inter-American Development Bank. The academic section of the Council is comprised of: Adrián Bonilla (Ecuador), Sandra Borda (Colombia), Cristina Eguizábal (Costa Rica), Guadalupe Gonzalez (Mexico), Rafael Hernández (Cuba), Luis Maira (Chile), Ana María Sanjuán (Venezuela), María Regina Soares de Lima (Brazil) and Juan Gabriel Tokatlian (Argentina). The general coordinators of the project are the former foreign relations ministry of Chile, Juan Gabriel Valdés, and the president of the Vidanta Foundation, Roberto Russell.
DANIEL CHAVEZ MORAN IS NAMED MEMBER OF THE ADVISORY COUNCIL FOR THE “CITIZEN SECURITY PROJECT” OF THE UNITED NATIONS DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMME
Daniel Chavez Moran, President of Vidanta Group, was invited by Heraldo Muñoz, former U.N. Ambassador for Chile and current Assistant Secretary General and Regional Director of the United Nations Development Programme, to join the Advisory Council for the “Citizen Security Project.” This Council is comprised of various ex-presidents of Latin America and distinguished representatives from academia, politics, the media, non-profit organizations, and the private sector, among others. It will formulate the first set of recommendations for the Report on Citizen Security and Development that the UNDP is currently preparing. Prior to the publication of the final Report, the Council will meet in Viña del Mar, Chile, on January 11 and 12 to discuss the first version of the document.
OPEN CALL FOR APPLICATIONS FOR THE 2013 VIDANTA FOUNDATION AWARD “CONTRIBUTIONS TO THE REDUCTION OF POVERTY AND INEQUIALITY IN LATINAMERICA AND THE CARIBBEAN”
The Vidanta Foundation calls for nonprofit organizations to present applications for the 2013 Vidanta Foundation Award. The first prize is $75,000 USD, the second prize is $50,000 USD, and the third prize is $25,000 USD.

In 2013, the Vidanta Foundation will grant a special Lifetime Achievement Award of $100,000 USD to an individual or nonprofit organization that has demonstrated outstanding efforts over time to combat poverty, inequality and discrimination in Latin America and the Caribbean.

WORKSHOP “INEQUALITY AND POVERTY: WHAT HAVE WE LEARNED? SOCIAL POLICIES AND PRODUCTIVE STRUCTURE”
On November 11 and 12, the Vidanta Foundation organized a the first workshop to reflect on poverty and inequality in Latin America. A number of specialists participated and exchanged their knowledge, ideas and experiences about a subject of significant interest to the Foundation. In addition, the workshop was extremely useful for future activities and projects of the Vidanta Foundation in this area.
INTERNATIONAL SEMINAR “LATIN AMERICA AND GLOBAL GOVERNABILITY”
On October 15 and 16 the International Seminar on “Latin America and Global Governability” took place in Mexico City. The event was sponsored by the Vidanta Foundation and a number of distinguished specialists in international relations from all over Latin America participated. The seminar was co-organized by the Center for Economic Research and Teaching (CIDE), the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC), the Latin American Development Bank (CAF), the Organization of American States (OAS), the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), the Ibero-American Secretary General (SEGIB) and the Vidanta Foundation.
FORUM FOR DISCUSSION: MÉXICO AND LATIN AMERICA
Within the framework of the founding of the Council of International Relations of Latin America, the Vidanta Foundation sponsored the discussion forum “Mexico and Latin America” with the goal of analyzing the prospects for this country’s relationships with the region. The forum was coordinated by Professor Guadalupe Gonzalez of CIDE and the speakers were Beatriz Paredes, Jorge Eduardo Navarrete and Andres Rozental. The forum took place October 15 in the ECLAC headquarters in Mexico City.
VIDANTA FOUNDATION AWARD CEREMONY 2012
On Tuesday October 16 in the Club of Industrialists in Mexico City, the awards ceremony for the 2012 Vidanta Foundation Award took place. Distinguished personalities in the field of politics, culture, diplomacy and business gathered to recognize the work of three non-governmental organizations and one academic contribution.
The awards were given to the Women’s Institute Foundation of Chile, the Rahab Foundation of Costa Rica, and the Pro Social Housing Foundation of Argentina, which received $100,000, $50,000 and $25,000 dollars respectively. The Vidanta Foundation also awarded $50,000 dollars to the academic work “Proposal and plans to reduce poverty and inequality” by Guillermo Cruces and Leonardo Gasparini.
LAUNCH OF THE COUNCIL OF INTERNATIONAL RELATIONS IN LATIN AMERICA
The Forum “The demand for a Latin American perspective in world affairs” took place at the formal launch of the Council of International Relations of Latin America (RIAL). The council was presided over by the ex-President of Chile, Ricardo Lagos, and took place on October 16 in the Club of Industrialists in Mexico City. At the end of the event, the Vidanta Foundation sponsored the closing dinner. The keynote speaker was Marco Aurelio Garcia, Special Advisor on International Affairs to the President of Brazil.

PREPARATION OF THE SEMINAR TO MARK THE FOUNDING OF THE COUNCIL OF INTERNATIONAL RELATIONS OF LATIN AMERICA
Vidanta Foundation collaborated with the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) and the Center for Economic Research and Teaching of Mexico (CIDE) in the organization of the International Seminar “Latin America and Global Governability”, which has been scheduled to mark the founding of the Council of International Relations of Latin America. The seminar will take place in Mexico City October 15 and 16, and will have the sponsorship of the Vidanta Foundation and the support of ECLAC, OAS, SEGIB, UNDP, and CAF. The Council will be presided over by the ex-President of Chile, Ricardo Lagos, and it will be comprised of Latin American politicians and academic specialists in international relations.

MEETING OF THE PANEL OF JUDGES FOR THE VIDANTA FOUNDATION AWARD
On August 28 the Panel of Awards Judges of the Vidanta Foundation Award met in San Jose del Cabo, Baja California to select the institutions to receive the 2012 awards. The judges were: the ex-President of Uruguay, Julio Maria Sanguinetti, Dr. Jose Luis Machinea, ex-Secretary General of ECLAC, Ambassador Carmelo Angulo and Professor Luis Maira. Prior to the meeting, the Candidate Pre-Selection Committee met in the same place on August 25, 26, and 27. Its members were Jorge Sanin, Director of the International Affairs Department of the OAS and Juan Alejandro Kawabata, Public Policy and Institutional Reinforcement Advisor of SEGIB.

Dr. Roberto Russell, President of the Vidanta Foundation and member of the Advisory Board of the Latin American Program of the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars, participated in the annual meeting of the board. The meeting took place June 11 in Washington, D.C. and offered an overview of the activities carried out by the Program in the last year and an exchange of ideas and opinions about the projects and areas of focus on the agenda for 2013.

Daniel Chavez Moran and the Vidanta Foundation were presenting sponsors of the gala dinner celebrating the 30th Anniversary of the Inter-American Dialogue. The event took place June 7 in the Hall of the Organization of American States in Washington, D.C. The speakers were Juan Manuel Santos, President of Colombia (via live webcast), Ricardo Lagos, ex-President of Chile, Robert Zoellick, President of the World Bank, Theodore McCarrick, Archbishop Emeritus of Washington, and Xavier Becerra, California State Representative in the U.S. Congress.
CALL FOR ENTRIES FOR THE 2012 VIDANTA FOUNDATION AWARD CLOSES
On May 31 the call for entries for the 2012 Vidanta Foundation Award recognizing “Contributions to the reduction of poverty and inequality in Latin America and the Caribbean” closed. 141 applications from 19 countries were received. The candidates will be evaluated by the Panel of Awards Judges on August 28 in San Jose del Cabo in Baja California, Mexico.

On March 12, 2012 in Santiago de Chile, Dr. Robert Russell, President of the Vidanta Foundation, attended the first meeting of the Advisory Council of the RIAL Forum. The meeting was held at the CEPAL headquarters. The purpose of the meeting was to launch a joint research program on international relations in Latin America. The RIAL Forum will be launched in October, 2012 with an international seminar to be held in Mexico City. Vidanta Foundation will sponsor the meeting.
FEBRUARY
The Foundation will sponsor a new project on the emergence of Asia, particularly China and India, and its implications for Latin America. The project will sit on two institutions associated with the Foundation: The Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars, Washington DC, and the Torcuato Di Tella University, Buenos Aires, Argentina.
JANUARY
In 2012, the Foundation Vidanta Prize "Contributions to the Reduction of Poverty and Inequality in Latin America and the Caribbean" was launched. This year the award recognized in different ways: a) academic papers containing original and practices developments and appropriate proposals in order to reduce poverty and inequality, and b) field work carried out in the region to reduce poverty and inequality and combating discrimination. For works referred to in item a), the first and second prize will consist of the sum of USD 50,000 and USD 25,000, respectively. With regard to field work, the first and second prize will consist of the sum of USD 100,000 and USD 50,000, respectively. All are contributed entirely by the Vidanta Foundation. See here
